Lost in Japan

2018 | "Multi-Platform Design" course, Shenkar Students were asked to choose an address and make a multi-platform work about the specific location. "Lost in Japan" is a "Breadcrumb" project starting from a zoomed in geographical point of view, and slowly taking steps back. It's the opposite of the classic breadcrumb trail, starting in Aokigahara Forest and slowly zooming out to the whole of Japan. Reading about the forest and studying Japan, I noticed that getting lost is very present in Japanese society, wether it is a physical or a mental experience, whether it is a conscience decision or an unfortunate turn of events. The project explores different ways of getting lost through different design platforms.

Part 1 | "Sea of Trees" is a video game based in Aokigahara Forest. You character is a Yurei spirit trying to find a way out of the forest by discovering different objects and meeting different types of people.

Part 2 | "Tokyo Underground" is an interactive trip into Tokyo's Subway, where you can choose your own route, move at your own pace through stations, and create a unique soundtrack according to the path you take. As you move forward, the stations you have passed slowly disappear, which allows you to get lost while still being in control and making choices.

Part 3 | "Lost in Japan" is the last piece of the project, and the most zoomed out, geographically. It explores 3 Japanese phenomenons: Hikikomori, Johatsu and Karoshi - put together and explained in one booklet, through dry information, stories, graphs and photos.
